WHO WE ARE

About

Al Waagah has been propagating the rights of the Deaf community and assisting them to cope socially, economically and to be addressed in sign language.
We lobby government structures, Religious bodies, educational institutions and other organisations on behalf of the Deaf community.
In order to bridge the gap between Deaf and hearing, we offer South African Sign Language classes (SASL) and South African Sign Language Interpreters (SASLI) classes.
Currently, we aim to establish a school for the Deaf which will be open to all and integrated with hearing children. The purpose is to integrate the Deaf with the hearing.
The Deaf community mostly hails from sub-economic backgrounds and due to poor
education are struggling to find employment. We arrange for food parcels at least 4 times a year and have an annual supper (Iftar) during the month of fasting (Ramadan) Annual social events, like eat and treat, camps and educational camps for the youth serves to create awareness and educate the youth on leadership and management.
Skills development training takes place at our office and at third parties’ facilities in order to provide essential skills in order for the Deaf to earn an income or find gainful employment.
Historically, Al-Waagah, established in 1995, focussed on religious instruction of the Deaf muslim community of the Cape. This was to fill a dire need for a place of instruction for this marginalised group. As we progressed, we found that there is a further need for creating awareness of the plight of the Deaf, their struggle with spoken and written language, social and economic issues.
The organisation in the last few years pivoted our strategic objectives in order to advocate the rights
of all Deaf to be able to use their mother tongue, sign language, and to be integrated into society.

Vision:

Every Deaf person is to be empowered, has the opportunity to integrate into society and achieve their fullest potential and participate in and contribute to all aspects of life.

Mission:

Al Waagah works to Advocate on behalf of the Deaf, irrespective of race or religion and to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening and integration of communities thereby eliminating barriers to opportunity and supporting the Deaf to reach their full potential and purpose in life. In order to achieve our vision and mission, we aim to establish a school which is fully integrated.
Deaf and hearing children will receive instruction and grow together, thus narrowing the gap between the two groups. We also strive to bring sign language to religious and other institutions in order for the Deaf community to benefit and have access.
